Jim's Maps and Waypoints

Below are links to a few maps of the Lake Anna area, most of which I prepared. These GPS-friendly, high-resolution maps reflect a compilation of data from a variety of sources and include waypoints for a number of points of interest, most notably trailheads and trail intersections. Also provided is a GPX file of the waypoints that appear on the maps, which come primarily from trail maps developed by Dominion Electric, which runs the nearby North Anna nuclear power plant.

Because Lake Anna is so large, most of the custom maps are optimized for printing on tabloid sized (11" x 17") or larger paper. If you don't have access to a large format printer, however, they can also be printed acceptably well on legal size (8.5" x 14") paper that most home and office printers can accommodate. Alternatively, I'd be happy to print the maps for you, or you can even upload the maps to FedEx Office (or similar vendor) for printing.

Lake Anna State Park Area
3mb PDF file

This custom 11" x 17" map shows a closer view of the Lake Anna State Park area (scale = 1:24,000).

Lake Anna Trails Overview
300kb PDF file

This 8.5" x 14" map was downloaded from the state park website and shows an overview of the park's trail system. It's useful to get oriented, but because it's not GPS-friendly, it's of limited value for actual navigation.

Lake Anna State Park Trails
Note: Updated 4-30-12 following 4-28 to 4-29-12 trip; 4mb PDF file

This custom 11" x 17" map shows a GPS-friendly view of the park's 11 major trails. Trail data was extracted from a variety of sources, but mostly from the Dominion Electric (see below) individual trail maps (scale = 1:15,000).

Lake Anna State Park Trails
3.2mb PDF file

This custom 11" x 17" map shows the same GPS-friendly view of the park's 11 major trails as the map above, but is overlaid on USGS 24K quad maps (scale = 1:15,000).

Lake Anna State Park Trails
1mb zipped file

This zip file contains all 11 of Dominion's individual PDF trail maps and guides. Alternatively, the files can be downloaded individually from Virginia Outdoors.

Lake Anna Waypoints
Note: Updated 4-30-12 following 4-28 to 4-29-12 trip; 4kb zipped file

The waypoints included in this  standard zipped GPX file correspond to those included on the Jim's custom maps above. Once unzipped, you can then load this file into almost any computer mapping software for download to your GPS receiver.
